Restaurant Review: Cempazuchi Comida Brava

Mexican cuisine in the Midwest? You got to be kidding me! At least, that is what I thought until I visited Cempazuchi Comida Brava.

Located on Brady street, Milwaukee East Side, Cempazuchi Comida Brava portrays a balmy ambiance permeated with wonderful smells that stimulate both the mood and taste buds upon entry. The bright colors of the interior light up Brady Street all year long and invite visitors to embrace the friendly atmosphere enhanced by traditional ornaments covering brightly colored walls.  Mexican music playing in the background lightens the mood further. It is clear why people are drawn to frequent Cempazuchi and disappear into Mexico, the real thing, for an evening of relaxation summer and winter long. However, no restaurant is a success without satisfying the customers’ appetites ….  Cempazuchi may have a wonderful atmosphere but the true reason locals frequent it is due to its mouthwatering, spectacular, authentic Mexican cuisine.

Food

The origination of the meals served stems from all over Mexico. From those dishes that I’ve tasted, these are ones not to  miss:

Sopa De Limon

This is one of my favorite items on the menu. Almost, by default, when I visit Cempazuchi I will order this soup. Pulled chicken mixed with tortilla strips and veggies in a hearty chicken broth infused with lime makes this a taste sensation, especially on cold winter nights. The bowl is the perfect size for lunch and I usually ask for a side of the corn tortillas to go with the soup.

Seafood Ceviche

This is my favorite ceviche in town. Moderately sized chunks of various seafood including crab, shrimp, fish are served in a cocktail glass with tortilla chips. The ceviche is smothered in a lime chile vinigraite which is not too spicy but flavorful enough to linger in ones mouth several seconds after each bite. I love it.

Enchiladas

As notes by @MoniqueSerpasPT the enchiladas at Cempazuchi are just sumptuous. These are not greasy but the combination of spices perfectly blended with the freshest ingredients makes these outstanding. I recommend the corn tortillas when ordering enchiladas or any entree for that matter as it compliments the meals better than regular flour tortillas.

Moles

@Mjreagles mentioned that his favorite on the menu are the moles. These, which are called Los Siete Moles De Oaxaca, are seven different varieties from Oaxaca state. Each week Cempazuchi serves a different mole over turkey and rice; one of the seven on the list. The seven types are Negro, Coloradito, Verde, Rojo, Machamanteles Amarillo and Chichilo.  Try any one of these seven and you’ll see why they’ve always been a favorite on the menu.

Fajitas De Nortenos

Beautifully presented in brightly colored plates this dish is neither greasy nor overwhelming yet extremely tasty. The combination of meat and fresh veggies create an explosion of flavors that melt in your mouth. My favorite is the chicken however the steak is also superb.

Daily Specials

I’ve never been disappointed with the daily special on the menu and I recommend asking about it as they’re usually authentic creations that are driven by current national Mexican holidays or other events.

Drinks
@Meenavem said it all: the margaritas are just fantastic.  A variety of flavors are offered, though my personal favorite is the regular house margarita, on the rocks. Cempazuchi only serves quality tequila in all its drinks that make these good value for money. They have a kick, however the taste is not overwhelmingly alcoholic. In addition, if you have a preferred tequila, there are 40+ different tequilas to chose from so you are guaranteed to find your fit.  An extended list of international, Mexican and local beers are also available as well other specialty drinks, such as the Cempazuchi Mojito. This version is made with tequila instead of rum and is truly an interesting variety from the regular.

Service/Price

Prices at Cempazuchi are moderate and meals range from $5 for appetizers to $18 for large specialties. Drinks range around $5-$10 per drink, depending on what you order.

Service varies. In general service is punctual and waiters are informed, however there have been a few times that service was sub par where our party would not be served for quite a significant of time or when extended waiting occurred during meals, but don’t let this ruin your experience as the cuisine will undoubtedly make for it.

Due to the popularity of Cempazuchi be prepared to wait for about 30 minutes before being seated, especially over weekends. If you are in a rush enjoy the house margarita and seafood ceviche in the meantime in the bar area but do not leave! I promise you won’t be disappointed.

Final notes…

Cempazuchi is my favorite Mexican restaurant in Milwaukee. I’ve highlighted a few of the dishes that I like, however it is really hard to go wrong with any order as I truly haven’t had anything mediocre yet. When you venture to Milwaukee again make your way to Cempazuchi Comida Brava and enjoy the stellar atmosphere, sumptuous food and excellent drink options. In addition, it is located nearby various other local pubs and music venues that makes it a great start to night out in Milwaukee.
